Shamed over Maui’s Inaction

Date: 1/8/2013

The International Whaling Commission is asking the New Zealand government to immediately ban set net and trawl fishing in all areas where Maui’s dolphins
are found. There are an estimated 55 adult Maui’s dolphins. Their population has dropped by an estimated 90% since set netting was introduced. Only one other country in the world, China, has let a dolphin species disappear. No Yangtze River dolphins, or baiji, have been seen since 2007.
