New Zealand sport fishers say the decision by the Ministry of Primary Industries to retain a ban on commercial fishing of marlin
is a victory in the campaign to help protect the species. Restaurants can still obtained it as a by-catch from commercial long line fishing vessels if caught outside New Zealand territorial waters. Groups will continue the fight to remove marlin from restaurant menus. They are calling for New Zealand to follow the lead of the United States, which passed legislation to ban the sale of marlin, spearfish and sailfish within mainland USA.
