German Jana Lutteropp was snorkelling 50 metres offshore at Palauea Beach, Maui, when the attack occurred around 5pm.
The water was choppy and visibility limited. Her right arm was severed below the shoulder and the limb wasn’t recovered. Witnesses didnt see the shark. Jana was on life support at Maui Memorial Medical Centre but died a week after being bitten. To protect against attacks, authorities recommend swimming, snorkelling and surfing with other people. Avoid the water at dawn and dusk, as this is when some shark species move inshore to feed.
