Experienced diver Jimmy Griffin, 48, was diving off western Ireland. Griffin said, Suddenly I was hit with what felt like
a really strong punch in the face. He was shaken like a rag doll as the two metre long eel wriggled and twisted. After the eel let go, Griffin got his regulator back into his mouth. He knew he was badly hurt because he could feel bubbles exiting through the injured cheek. The divers were delayed by a decompression stop before they could surface. Griffin required 20 stitches and a skin graft to his left cheek.
