It was easier for Sgt Stephen Jackel Jr to scuba dive when he still had a foot. He lost
the right one because he used it to put out a fire to avoid burning alive in southern Afghanistan. He lost the left one a year later because even though the bones healed, it still hurt. The pain was so intense he decided he’d rather not have it. The idea is this: Wounded veterans go out diving because being in the water soothes both the physical pain and the despair of post-traumatic stress.
