Whitebait Species Spawning Ground

Date: 16/09/2013

A spawning ground for the largest of the whitebait species was found in the last place many would look – the middle of Hamilton, New Zealand.
NIWA scientists tracked giant kokopu to a spawning ground in the city’s Bankwood Stream, and say the discovery will help restore the declining population. The giant kokopu is the largest of the five native New Zealand whitebait species but the only one in which spawning has never before been seen or eggs discovered.
