Shipwreck Museum Plan, Wellington

Date: 25/03/2014

Developer Garth MacIntyre wants to build a three-storey building, with the ground floor taken up with a Shipwreck Heritage Institute of New Zealand.

He described it as a ‘visitor experience with museum elements’, saying it would tell the story of shipwrecks throughout New Zealand’s maritime history. The idea stemmed from his interest in diving shipwreck sites, which he had done for 35 years. There are 2300 recorded wrecks in New Zealand waters, dating from the 1700s to the present.
