Shark Diving Operators to be Regulated

Date: 25/03/2014

New Zealand shark cage-diving operators will be regulated. Companies offering tourists the opportunity to dive with great whites need to apply for a permit and follow a code of compliance by the end of 2014.
The move comes after locals on Stewart Island accused the island’s two cage-diving firms of operating in a way that has led to a change in the behaviour of sharks, leading to more interactions between the predators and divers. Divers are worried that using bait from boats to attract sharks encourages them to hunt for food around their vessels.
