19th-Century Shipwreck Rediscovered

Date: 26/05/2014

NOAA located the wreck of the passenger steamer City of Chester, which sank in 1888 in a collision with the steamer Oceanic in dense fog near the Golden Gate Bridge.

The rediscovery restores an important historical link to San Francisco’s early Chinese-American community. Reports at the time criticised Oceanic’s Chinese crew in the racially charged atmosphere of the times. Criticism turned to praise when the bravery of the crew in rescuing many of City of Chester’s passengers was revealed. It is a protected site and a grave belonging to the state of California.
