Ray Hope

New Zealand  Spearfishers of the 1960’s and 70’s will remember the imposing presence of Ray at competitions and at  NZ Underwater Association’s  AGMs.  A life member and a past president of the Hutt Valley Underwater Club. Ray is remembered for his strong voice on matters of concern and being ready to ‘walk the talk.’  Often referred to as the “Colonel” he was known for his ability to state a purpose and see it through to completion. His initiatives helped the Hutt Club to become one of the largest NZ diving clubs, complete with its own building. He served on the inaugural NZUA Sporting Committee and was chairman from 1972 -1974. Ray represented NZ in international spearfishing competitions: New Caledonia 1968, Australia 1971 and the World Championships – Peru 1975

Ray was farewelled by several hundred people at a service in Wellington
