Fisherman Leon Bekker poses with the great white shark he caught off the South African coast.

Leon Bekker was fishing from the shore using heavy duty tackle and was fined £8,500 under the Marine Living Resources Act.

Leon Bekker, of George, Western Cape, pleaded guilty to contravention of the Marine Living Resources Act which includes attempting to kill, disturb or be in possession of a white shark without a permit. Bekker pointed out that he had no idea at first that he’d hooked a great white shark but he pleaded guilty so as not to waste the court’s time.
